D's Lightroom Workbook is best at showing one how organization should really work and covers working with all of Lightroom's modules. Laura Shoe recommended this book and I am glad that she did. Her workshops and this book make a complex topic a lot easier. I know Lightroom quite well, but this book is giving me so many 'tips and tricks' to speed up my work I really didn't imagine. If you are in doubt about this book, buy it! Bought it,haven't used it.
The Photoshop Lightroom Workbook: Workflow Not Workslow in Lightroom 2 by Seth Resnick
Impulse buy like so many other instructional books. I started shooting with my sister's old Brownie when I was about six. I have loved photography ever since. Five to eight years ago I took three D Photoshop workshops. During those workshops I developed an appreciation for the intelligence, skills and experience of Seth Resnick and Jamie Spritzer--D Constrained by the time demands of a business venture I was not able to practice photography so much as I would have liked over the past five years.
During those years, Lightroom was developed. I was able to go on a photo trek to Iceland to shoot the volcano with D this spring. While there, I saw a demonstration of the power of Lightroom 3. I knew then that I needed it and that I needed to learn how to use it. Saturday, just after I had taken some pictures of my granddaughters and while I was installing a solid state drive in my desktop, the book arrived.

I am now stepping into Lightroom at version 3 as a rank beginner, but I was not disappointed. D's book leads the reader by the hand through LR3 from, "Here's what it is, what it looks like and how to set it up," to, "Here's what it does and how to do it. It also covers such basics as white balance and color space and makes its continuing pitch for DNG digital negative format. In these few introductory chapters some things I've missed in three previous live workshops were explained in a way that made them clear for me now.
The book is written that well. Following the introductory chapters, D carefully and completely explains each module of LR3 in clear, concise and understandable plain English. Along the way the reader receives tips from obviously very experienced users with in-depth knowledge of photography, digital photography, the business of photography, computers, photoshop, and especially Lightroom 3.
Such tips as many important keyboard shortcuts, keeping all your photos in one catalog and don't disconnect an external hard drive containing images or a catalog before closing LR3. Key wording and its importance is carefully explained and D describes a clever adaptation of the Painter Tool to make key wording quick and easy. Many will have no use for one such new feature--the watermark editor--but if you're one of those who have a need wedding photographers, lawyers it is a handy tool.
A more popular new feature might be that LR3 allows a user to publish directly to the photo site Flicker. The new features in LR3 are distinctively marked and I suppose a photographer with experience in earlier versions of Lightroom could make a first pass through this workbook stopping only at these new sections and get up to speed right away before reviewing the book in detail. The book is organized with the main points of each chapter concisely restated at the end of each chapter, which is a big help for studying, learning or reviewing quickly. The book is peppered with lots of actual pictures of LR3 screens used to illustrate points and they make for easy comprehension.
It is a tutorial as well as a desk reference for long term usage. It makes LR3 accessible, usable and un-intimidating. This is the manual which should come with LR3. After a complete review of LR3's modules, D gives the reader comprehensive and expert, experienced advice on using LR3 to "achieve efficient digital work flow. The main thrust of the book is [after years of experience and hundreds of thousands if not millions of images] here's how we do it at D and we think this is the best way.
Lightroom is a valuable and powerful digital asset manager.
If an experienced user just follows the D suggestions in this book the results will be extremely rewarding. A novice user following this book will jump from beginner to expert in one hop. Here you will see how to put one together, control how it displays, and export and display.
