Plus the english is quite poor and I skipped very easily over many sections in certain chapters as it was run on information not adding anything to the story.

This parallel biography of 2 women who went on very different path is very interesting all the way through. Apart from giving an understanding of the women itself, it gives an interesting account of the political situation, especially in Pakistan and about the clan mindset. I started to read the book, having got the impression from reviews that the author was apologizing the woman who went the fundamentalist path and blackmailing Ayaan Hirsi Ali. That proved to be a biased view, although not entirely.

The stories of both women are quite convincing.

See a Problem?

The reason I give it 4 and not 5 stars is that it is too little analysis of why these extraordinarily women chose two so very different paths. Especially with regard to Ayaan Hirsi Ali, I believe her discovery and admiration of the western enlightenment philosophers is quite understandable considered her intelligence and background, and there is no reason to ridicule such a standpoint. On the contrary, coming from a tightly controlled and dogmatic environment, it is quite understandable.

Why can we not be generous enough to accept that the freedom of thought we ourself enjoy then can be an arousing revelation? Filled with interesting details and psychological insights. I doubt there are many people who know both America and Pakistan as well as this author. Having read infidel and nomad, it's interesting to see things from a different perspective, but it gets a little but repetitive as you get into it.

The book alternates between each woman's story, making for riveting suspense. A fascinating story that reflects this polarized era. She lives with her family in Massachusetts. The Women's Bookshop kobo ebooks Login.
